What is a Pap Smear?

Pap smear or Papanicolaou test is a commonly known painless procedure done as a regular gynecology checkup. In this procedure, a tiny sample of cervix cells is collected by gently inserting a brush into your vagina. The whole procedure will take 10-20 minutes maximum. A Pap smear may cause mild vaginal bleeding and discomfort for up to 24 hours after the procedure. Pap smear test results can take from a few days to 3 weeks. It’s recommended to get your pap smear:

When performed as a screening test, a Pap test can be used alone or along with a test for strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). It can also be used to determine the underlying cause of vaginal symptoms, including abnormal bleeding or discharge.

There is no special preparation required before getting tested for a Pap smear. However, it’s advised to avoid intercourse, douching, or using vaginal medicine for 2 days before the test.
